LAST WEEK

Well, in similar fashion to the week before, Spring Carnival fever continued to rage at Volume on Saturday night – this time for the fervor and frocks of the Carlton Draught Cox Plate. With Dee Dee on decks a little after ten, the big room was out of the gates and racing towards what was already looking like a serious winner! Ivan Gough was up next, and whereas the term ‘scratching’ has negative connotations in the majestic world of thoroughbred horse racing, down at Volme each week, it’s one of the highlights of Ivy’s sets. With the room continuing to grow and the vibe getting larger and larger, Mark James hopped into the saddle and rode the DVJ’s and 1200’s like the legendary jockey he is – the highly appropriate and timely delivery of Pete Tong’s latest Essential Tune, ‘White Horse – the Wonderland Mike Monday rework’, one of many champion’s moments! As peak time steadily approached and Melbourne’s biggest club night rose in a familiar fashion to boiling point, with hands in the air and screams of delight, the prizewinning pony we call Padula entered the Bird Cage Booth and … bingo … Volume was officially on fire. Delivering a hard and fast, but dirty and deep set, Padula worked the DJM1000 and crowd into a veritable frenzy with the likes of ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ and ‘Black Sabrina’. With Padula back in the Winner’s Circle, enjoying a beer or two with his many connections, Richie Walton took the reigns of the rampaging big room and with choons like ‘Rippin’ Kitten’ and ‘Freak You’ (and even one of his own – see Keep The Volume Down On This, below) kept the floor galloping for an hour and a half of bang on sounds. With Volume’s race nearly won and lost for another week, Harley Augustine brought everyone’s favourite club night to a strong finish with storming progressive choons that hit all the right notes with the 6am faithful! Bring on Black Beauty next week …

THIS WEEK

Saturday, October 29 2005, Volume goes Black to basics

Darkness is not the presence of black … it is merely the absence of light …

Echoing the enormous success and resounding fun of Volume’s recent ‘White’ edition, Room680 is pleased to announce the highly anticipated follow up … and this time Volume is back in BLACK: Long synonymous with evil, darkness, danger and finality, the colour black remains the most powerful and commonly used tone in the spectrum of Mother Nature’s rich palate – and yet it is denied access to the exclusive realms of the common rainbow and is relentlessly plagued by negative connotations … Well people, it’s time to right these wrongs and pay homage to Melbourne’s favourite colour, the world’s finest tone – the very colour of our galaxy and our skies at night. So dress like the ace of spades, paint it black and ride in the night as Volume turns completely ‘Black’ on Saturday, October 29th. Featuring Volume’s legendary intricately themed décor and concepts, and complete with black lights, blackouts, and of course … Black Russians and Black Label on ice: Volume ‘Black’ will be a black night of cheeky darkness, choons noir and pre-Halloween mischief in the dark, but friendly, shadows of Clubland … Helping to keep the darkness light hearted, spinning the blackest of black vinyl, and cueing the blackest of DVJ-X1’s, will be a black label selection of DJ’s from Volume’s little black book, including Mark ‘Blackout’ James, Ivan ‘Back To Black’ Gough, Steve ‘Black Panther’ Bleas, Dee ‘Blacky’ Dee, Andrew ‘The Crow’ Padula, Andy ‘Ace Of Spades’ J, and Harley ‘Black Hawk’ Augustine in the Dark Room; and Tahl of Darkness, Frightening Feigan, Rancid Rowie, R.I.P TKO, and Frightfully Fierce Fusion in the Trick Or Treat Suite.
