Welcome to Volume Control: your very own
startlingly, ravishingly and brilliantly vivacious
VIP Volume newsletter.
Just a reminder that
Volume Control is prepared by Volume resident MC, DJ
and writer, Harley Augustine, so if you have
anything to contribute (news, info, feedback etc.)
then please email him at
harley@writemix.com.au
by 8pm each Monday and he’ll do his darndest to
include it on your behalf.
Well, the man with paper pants walks slowly and sits
completely still … but the people on the peak hour
train still call him ‘Russell’ …So, without any
further delay, here’s the next tantalising issue …

LAST WEEK
With the Caulfield Cup run, won and lost, there were
more than a few post-races faces in the early (and
large) crowd that kicked off yet another installment of
Melbourne clubbing shenanigans at Volume, on Saturday
night. Hot designer dresses, fascinating fascinators,
band-aids placed strategically on the back of heels in
strappy shoes … indeed in the spirit of the Spring
Racing Carnival, the only thing that separated the
world’s most livable city’s favourite club night from
Caulfield Racecourse was a group of horses running
around a manicured oval with brightly coloured midgets
strapped to their backs, whipping them – oh, and perhaps
a few blind-drunk kids from suburbia wearing imitation
designer sunnies, ill-fitting suits and cheap ‘100%
polyester’ ties. Steve Bleas was the first horse out of
the gates in the Main Room and warmed it and its
restless early crowd to precisely the right temperature
with a clever mix of electro and progressive house
weapons. With Steve back in the stables and being packed
into the champion’s float for another week, Mark James
was the next to burst from the barriers and got off to a
flying start with a string of huge room choons, old and
new. Boasting a tidy new CD album bristling with upfront
bleeps and beats, Mark brought Melbourne’s favourite
living room to the boil with the likes of XXXX, XXXXX
and XXXXXX. The man the world calls ‘Ivy’ (Ivan Gough)
followed Mark and with his usual array of exclusive
cuts, mega-early promos and scratching wizardry, rode
all four decks with ease and showed a vibe-heavy and
swelling main floor exactly what being a jockey of the
disc variety was all about. With Ivan doing a lap or two
of the winner’s circle with a JD and Coke or two, Volume
was treated once again to the thumping sounds and
driving rhythms of the man with the titled hat and more
monikers than an international secret agent, the
irrepressible Andy J. Old, new, dub, remix, vocals,
funky, dirty: you name it and Andy dropped it from a
great height and with all the force that Melbourne’s
biggest club night crowd has grown to know and love
about him. Harley Augustine was the next horse to lead
the pack and with a strong mix of storming ‘up for it’
choons, took the still bustling floor on a well-selected
journey through several genres without missing a stride,
and with the inclusion of gems like ‘Moving Too Fast’
and a progressive dub of Tom Novy’s new bomb, ‘Take It’.
Dee Dee was the last horse in Saturday’s race and after
mounting his steed at 5am, proceeded to tear the room up
all the way to the finish line with bombs like ‘Slumber
Party Massacre’ and ‘Never Win’. A huge night, a huge
vibe, a huge success … but hey … that’s what Volume’s
stable of champions does best, right? Bet on it …

Coming Up …
Saturday, October 29
2005, Volume goes Black to basics
Darkness is not the presence of black … it is
merely the absence of light …
Echoing the enormous success and resounding fun of
Volume’s recent ‘White’ edition, Room680 is pleased to announce the highly
anticipated follow up … and this time Volume is back in BLACK: Long synonymous
with evil, darkness, danger and finality, the colour black remains the most
powerful and commonly used tone in the spectrum of Mother Nature’s rich palate –
and yet it is denied access to the exclusive realms of the common rainbow and is
relentlessly plagued by negative connotations … Well people, it’s time to right
these wrongs and pay homage to Melbourne’s favourite colour, the world’s finest
tone – the very colour of our galaxy and our skies at night. So dress like the
ace of spades, paint it black and ride in the night as Volume turns completely
‘Black’ on Saturday, October 29th. Featuring Volume’s legendary
intricately themed décor and concepts, and complete with black lights,
blackouts, and of course … Black Russians and Black Label on ice: Volume ‘Black’
will be a black night of cheeky darkness, choons noir and pre-Halloween mischief
in the dark, but friendly, shadows of Clubland … Helping to keep the darkness
lighthearted, spinning the blackest of black vinyl, and cueing the blackest of
DVJ-X1’s, will be a black label selection of DJ’s from Volume’s little black
book, including Mark ‘Blackout’ James, Ivan ‘Back To Black’ Gough, Steve ‘Black
Panther’ Bleas, Dee ‘Blacky’ Dee, Andrew ‘The Crow’ Padula, Andy ‘Ace Of Spades’
J, and Harley ‘Black Hawk’ Augustine in the Dark Room; and Tahl of Darkness,
Frightening Feigan, Rancid Rowie, R.I.P TKO, and Frightfully Fierce Fusion in
the Trick Or Treat Suite.
