LAST WEEK
With exams at all levels
of the education system all but over, bugger me sideways with a 1980’s ET soft
toy if Saturday night wasn’t completely and utterly out of this world. By the
time Dee Dee put his first choon onto the ones and twos, the queue for
Melbourne’s biggest weekly club party was more than vaguely reminiscent of the
million man march. Okay, so there weren’t a million people standing along
Glenferrie Road, but I’m sure you get the idea. Rocking out with his perfected
Big Room sounds, Dee Dee stoked the floor’s fires with ease and by the time
Andrew Padula and Ivan Gough were in the booth to take over, had everyone in the
swelling main room right where wanted them. No need to adjust your monitors …
yes, the last sentence did say that Andrew Padula and Ivan Gough took over …
together. In a rare but sublime treat, Padula and Ivy joined forces for an
exclusive one-on-one set that not only blew the roof off the main floor … but
also had kids calling their mates (at home on the couch) from the throng to rub
it in their faces! Choon after choon, bomb after bomb … the dynamic pair kept
raising the bar and Volume’s massive kept raising their hands and voices. With
Padula and Ivy back at the bar sipping water and JD, respectively, the scene was
set for the highly anticipated return of globall production duo, Parallel Sound.
Having already rocked Volume’s calendar earlier in the year, the PS lads were
clearly stoked to be back in Melbourne’s clubbing institution - and their
cheering, up for anything floor was clearly feeling the same way. Wasting no
time at all, PS kicked off their live set with a series of driving, proggy
numbers with familiar vocal hooks weaving in and out of them, before cleverly
winding their way into deeper, slightly darker territory with serious dose of
atmospherically stimulating progressive and progressive trance floaters.
Responding to every musical twist and turn, the floor continued to kick like a
mule and more than few people’s faith in live dance acts was clearly restored.
With two and half hours to play with, PS certainly made the most of it and any
discerning clubber would have little hesitation in agreeing that it was, without
doubt, one of the kick ass sets of the year. Padula versus Gough and a live act
that you could well be telling your kids you saw in ‘the early days’, all in the
one night … “God bless Volume, because nothing will save NoLove!”
