LAST WEEK

Well the flyer and press ad leading up to last week’s Volume said it all: Birds and Bees doing the Volume thing in Spring! Okay, so maybe it didn’t, but it was still cool and certainly didn’t stop Saturday night from being one of the largest and loudest in living memory … did it now?

With the uber-cool Renaissance jock, Yousef, rocking the rafters of Room680 the night before, Saturday night’s Volume massive were treated to some world-class décor, done just right: From Grecian pillars adorned with ivy, to an 8-panel-strong wall of Pioneer plasma’s!

Electro maestro, Steve Bleas, got things started in the Main Room and didn’t waste any time treating an early and eager packed main floor to his eclectic blend of rocking beats – and yet again, his trusty promo remix copy of Gorillaz ‘Dare’ got a spin and subsequent hands in the air. In unusual circumstances, Steve got what every DJ dreams of – an extra half hour in their set – and put it to good use, before Mark James finally rocked up and started to rock on out. In a tight set which covered every nook and cranny of today’s definition of House, Mark was well on song and by delivering a mixture of old and new choons, had the floor eating out the palm of his hand like a bird – of course, a bird in Spring, and one doing the upfront Volume thing, that is!

With the Main Room busier than a beehive in everyone’s favourite season, Ivan ‘I was on national prime time tele last week’ Gough strode to the swinging rig and set about pollinating all and sundry with deliciously sweet drops of dance music honey – including ‘Flaunt It’, ‘I Want You’, and a crazy mix of Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’. Andrew Padula was on decks next and played an average set which bored the disinterested Main Room to tears … of course, if you believe this last sentence, then you have failed our Volume Control IQ test and must remove yourself from the distribution set immediately! No, Padula rocked it, people – as he does! From huge new bombs that won’t hit other clubs for months, to recent cult cuts that make Volume Melbourne’s biggest club night, the man they call ‘Cousin’ was on fire … and so too was the video wall behind him!

With Padula out the door and the official ‘Padula Has Left The Building’ PA announcement and video notification, the big room’s master blaster, Dee Dee, attached his phones to his lobes and turned the floor into a wave of screams, waves, claps, and ‘Yeah Dee Dee’s!’ in record time. With the video wall still burning, Harley Augustine then brought yet another huge Volume to a close with a mix of progressive and progressive trance weapons – old and new, anthem and up-and-coming!

Coming Up …

Saturday, October 29 2005, Volume goes Black to basics

Darkness is not the presence of black … it is merely the absence of light …

Echoing the enormous success and resounding fun of Volume’s recent ‘White’ edition, Room680 is pleased to announce the highly anticipated follow up … and this time Volume is back in BLACK: Long synonymous with evil, darkness, danger and finality, the colour black remains the most powerful and commonly used tone in the spectrum of Mother Nature’s rich palate – and yet it is denied access to the exclusive realms of the common rainbow and is relentlessly plagued by negative connotations … Well people, it’s time to right these wrongs and pay homage to Melbourne’s favourite colour, the world’s finest tone – the very colour of our galaxy and our skies at night. So dress like the ace of spades, paint it black and ride in the night as Volume turns completely ‘Black’ on Saturday, October 29th. Featuring Volume’s legendary intricately themed décor and concepts, and complete with black lights, blackouts, and of course … Black Russians and Black Label on ice: Volume ‘Black’ will be a black night of cheeky darkness, choons noir and pre-Halloween mischief in the dark, but friendly, shadows of Clubland … Helping to keep the darkness lighthearted, spinning the blackest of black vinyl, and cueing the blackest of DVJ-X1’s, will be a black label selection of DJ’s from Volume’s little black book, including Mark ‘Blackout’ James, Ivan ‘Back To Black’ Gough, Steve ‘Black Panther’ Bleas, Dee ‘Blacky’ Dee, Andrew ‘The Crow’ Padula, Andy ‘Ace Of Spades’ J, and Harley ‘Black Hawk’ Augustine in the Dark Room; and Tahl of Darkness, Frightening Feigan, Rancid Rowie, R.I.P TKO, and Frightfully Fierce Fusion in the Trick Or Treat Suite.
