LAST WEEK

With the darkest night of them all, Halloween, only 72-odd hours away, Volume shrouded itself in darkness to bring Melbourne’s biggest club night’s faithful the follow up to ‘White’ – ‘Volume Black’. With a custom lighting rig, ripped and tweaked for maximum impact in minimum light (loads of black light, UV lights, that sort of stuff) and the booth located in the cob-webbed Dining Room, ablaze with a wall of Pioneer plasma flaming mayhem … Steve Bleas started rattling some ribs with a deep opening set that jacked more than a few lanterns on the dark and brooding main floor. Andrew ‘Black Crow’ Padula was next up and was up to every trick as he set about treating the swelling and vibe-fuelled room to a cranking set of driving House bombs – bombs, as per usual, that were causing serious damage on the hands-in-the-air front! Fast, hard, soft, slow … you name it, dude, he went there. Mark ‘In The Dark’ James made his way through the cobwebs into the booth and took over where Padula left off … and with the now infamous Volume peak time fast approaching, dropped gems including ‘White Horse’ and a new remix of ‘Chase The Sun’ and ensured the blacked out floor was rocking just right. With lasers rolling, the plasma’s burning and the choons rocking, Ivan Gough wore the cans next and within a matter of seconds was scratching his ass off with his usual, spot-on precision. ‘Flaunt It’ and the new killer mix of the Pet Shop Boy’s ‘West End Girls’ both featured in Ivy’s set, which was riddled with a host of other black gems that kept the room at boiling point. With Ivan back at the bar sipping a Black Russian, Andy J hit the decks next and kicked off a rocking set with his now Volume-customary intro: “What Happened? Is Everything Cool? Alright.” Very cool, and so was his track selection which took in the likes of ‘The Music’ and a storming new Madonna remix and finished with THAT evil laugh from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”!
