LAST WEEK

With a full club, hands in the air and asses shaking like there was no tomorrow, you could have been forgiven for not realising that there were several major ‘dance events’ taking place around Melbourne’s BPM traps on Saturday night … probably because our city’s biggest club night, Volume, was one of them!

First cab off the rank in the state’s favourite Main Room was Dee Dee, who dropped a veritable swag of new choons and fresh big room beats on Volume’s early risers and rockers; and showed once again why he is the master of all things huge – choons, breakdowns, beats … the lot! With Dee Dee relaxing over a beer or five before heading off to rock another neck of Melbourne’s clubbing woods, next up on decks was Steve Bleas, who, after a bottle of water to aid a mild bout of the flu, got stuck right into things and took the big n’ early crowd on a one-way trip to Partyville with his infectious brand of writhing electro and driving House.

Ivan Gough was in the booth next and boy oh boy … did he come to play or what?! Sporting a crate of fresh wax and a wallet of burning hot CD-R’s, Ivan “Sensei” Gough tore through an hour and a half of pure, unadulterated bombs – many of which, as always, were cuts, reworks and remixes by the man himself, and every one of them exclusive for Volume’s mighty massive. With Ivan back at the bar with a JD n’ Coke or three (and kicking it with birthday boy, Jono Fernandez, and his party hearty crew) the scene was finally set for the night’s man of the minute, Andy J, to tilt his hat and take control of yet another worldwide exclusive: the launch of his latest single, called, funnily enough, ‘Tilt My Hat’. With giveaways of the CD single going quicker than a cat out the back door at a convention for dogs with anger management issues, Andy’s set raged on … bomb after bomb … new choon after new choon … including the likes of Candy Girl’s ‘Quesh’ and the Vandalism mix of (again, funnily enough) ‘Tilt My Hat’.

Once Andy J had delivered his penultimate white label knockout punch, Tahl strode to the main booth’s pair of 1200’s and set about teaching them, and the peak time crowd, a thing or two about how to shake some serious ass and bounce some big time booty. With his inimitable style of big room breaks, booty funking beats and party time mayhem, Tahl took the floor on a ride through the finest cuts in his crate and with hands in the air and hips wiggling, the room was putty in his hands from go to woe. Harley Augustine caught exactly what Tahl was throwing and after opening with Hybrid’s latest prog-breaks remix weapon ‘A Kiss For The Dying’, took the Volume AM faithful on a journey through the finest club cuts of the minute and a handful of Melbourne’s all-time favourite morning set ‘must haves’.
