TAHL |
In a
thriving local scene that’s bustling with exciting talent and at a time when the
floor’s ears and feet are more discerning than perhaps ever before, right now it
takes a special kind of DJ to rise to the occasion – and it takes something
entirely different again to rise to the top. Bearing this in mind, when you stop
to consider just how much DJ Tahl has achieved in his jam-packed spinning and
grinning career, one thing is blatantly obvious: he’s got way more than your
average dose of skills to pay the bills …
A
tireless and gifted performer who plucks his inimitable passion and enthusiasm
for BPM’s fresh from the dance floor, Tahl has rightfully shot straight into the
stratosphere of Melbourne’s Party Breaks, Electro and Mash Up A-list, and in
just a few short years has managed to achieve what most aspiring jock’s could
only hope too. Always upfront, always up for it, and always smiling from
headphoned ear to headphoned ear, Tahl has made an enviable habit of teaching
discerning party people a thing or two about how to party – really party,
that is, and party right! From tight lowdown bars to writhing main room throngs,
and from intimate one-off events to some of Australia’s most prestigious dance
music calendar highlights, his infectious love of anything with a broken beat
and hook, coupled with his surgical precision behind a set of 1200’s and clever
crate stocking, has seen him rock the lot and keep rolling … always … towards
true stardom and beyond …
In an
age where the most common criticism of DJ’s is that they don’t understand a
floor, let alone how to rock one, Tahl is a noticeably serious breath of fresh
air. It makes perfect sense, though: you see that’s where his roots are firmly
planted and to this very day you’ll catch him in the middle of the massive,
hands skyward and feet shuffling before, after, and in-between sets. When asked
why he’s not wallowing in the aloofness of superiority like so many others
around him in the booth, his reply is simple: “How can a crowd be expected to
dance and have a great time unless the DJ is into it himself??” He makes an
excellent point, I’m sure you’ll agree …
Starting
his dance music life as a humble promoter with the iconic likes of Future
Entertainment and Hardware Corp late last century, Tahl first began spinning
choons and dropping bombs of his own with fellow partner in crime (and now
equally favoured Melbourne talent) DJ Feigan, shortly thereafter. Unable to
fight his passion for pressings and parties any longer, by the time 2000 rocked
up, Tahl had already teamed up with Feigan to begin throwing a series of monthly
parties at one of Melbourne’s then new and seemingly unknown venues, Two Floors
Up. To cut an exciting but equally long story short, the parties were aptly
dubbed ‘RELAX’ and when they eventually wound up after two years of non-stop
fervor and fun, the club was subsequently on the city’s map: Relax … 400 party
people breaking down the doors once a month for 24 straight will do that!
But just
as the door to RELAX closed, a myriad of new ones invariably opened for the
irrepressible Tahl. On top of securing residencies at the likes of Za Bar, Blue
Bar, Fractured, and Melbourne’s weekly clubbing institution, Volume at
Room680 - where he has clock-rocked crowds for over two years - his flair for
fun and keen abilities have also seen him play an integral role in both the
ongoing operation and of course, spot on musical direction, of a range of highly
successful club nights and parties - including Quality Control (in
cahoots with local legends Sean Quinn, Dan Mangan, Keltec and old mate, Feigan),
Blue Bar Sundays, and the ever popular House and Electro oriented
Bamboozled (alongside great mates and heavy hitting spinners Boogs, Spacey
Space, Rowie and Breaks event guru Chris Mitchell).
A strong
supporter of ‘the scene’ at grassroots level, and a serious believer in
assisting fresh local talent (“We’ve got some of the best DJ talent in the world
right here in Melbourne, why is everyone so hung up on internationals?” he
recites on the topic) Tahl’s dance community spirit and belief in helping those
around him with all the skill and enthusiasm he can muster has also seen him
share cans with some of the biggest names that ‘everyone is hung up on’! Carl
Cox, James Zabiela, Tom Neville, BT, John Digweed, Tiga, Danny Howells, Meat
Katie, Lucien Foort, Ewan Pearson, DJ Hyper, Chris Fortier, Phil K, NuBreed,
Norman Jay, B.L.I.M, Infusion and Poxy Music have all had the pleasure of Tahl
warming the booth for them. And as for venues, well, from Room680 to The Prince,
Seven, QBH, The Metro, Q Bar, Altitude and Platform 1 … you name it and Tahl’s
inevitably seen it, read it, played it and rocked it …
Speaking
of rocking it, with Tahl making his playing debut for Australia’s premier dance
act promoter, Future Entertainment, at Godskitchen recently, the sky’s the limit
and who knows … he might even make it into a booth at Australian dance music’s
Mecca, the 35,000 strong Summadayze party. Might? Actually, he’s already made it
for 2005/2006, and like every other upward twist and well-planned turn in his
amazing career, there’s no doubt that he’ll take it in his stride … there’s also
no doubt that he’ll enjoy the experience with those that matter most to him: his
floor, his mates, his crate, and his trusty ‘Toorak Trash’ cap!
Tahl is
a rare talent, but better still, he’s a rare believer in what makes a party a
party and putting in as much as you can without asking for anything in return.
With a diverse sound that ranges from Party Breaks to driving Electro House, and
snippets of every mashed-up genre in between, if there’s a party to be started
or one that needs a swift kick in the jewels, he’s not only your man … he’s your
one stop shop for instant results.
2005 has
been a huge year for Tahl, but 2006 will be even bigger …
Party
people … you’ve been warned …
