ANDREW PADULA

If Australian House music has a rising star at the moment, then Andrew Padula is it: no ifs, no buts, and definitely no maybes. From thumping electro stabs to squealing guitars licks and throbbing bass lines, he makes main rooms jump and has forged a name for himself as one of the most respected and passionate jock’s in the country. Mind you, he’s also one of the very best – so good, in fact, that Pete Tong and Tiesto have dubbed Andrew Padula “one of the most promising up and coming DJ’s in the world”.

Known for his sublime energy and ability to engulf a room with his infectious brand of musical mischief, Padula is the complete package: a DJ’s DJ who is a clear favorite with peers and crowds alike. His track selection is nigh on legendary, the philosophy behind which is delightfully simple – “If it’s funky, chunky and makes people move, then I’ll spin it!” he says.

Honing his craft in Melbourne’s musically rich local scene and rising through the ranks as a bar DJ, Andrew Padula has developed a loyal legion of fans wherever he’s gigged, and has played every set since day one as though he were on the main stage at Summadayze – tight, focused and spot on. It’s little wonder, then, that in 2005 his raw energy and highly polished skills saw him accomplish this goal, and over 20,000 screaming New Year’s Day hedonists (with hands in the air) showed their wild appreciation!

A main room resident at Melbourne’s finest upfront clubs, ZOS and Room680, since winning the inaugural and highly prestigious Heineken Found@Thirst DJ competition in 2004, Andrew’s career has been a flurry of activity – culminating in highly successful trips to Asia on headline tours and representing Heineken. His industry-renowned skills and technical precision have also caught the eye of DJ equipment juggernaut, Pioneer International, who invited him to join the likes of Roger Sanchez, James Zabiela, Mark Farina and Phil K to become an official ambassador for their prestigious product range.

No stranger to the world of production, Andrew’s first foray into remixing saw him (alongside studio partner, KayBee) tackle and nail Jan Driver’s 2004 bomb, ‘Ladies Want It’, sending it to #2 on the ARIA Dance Chart in its first week of release. Recent stints of increased studio time have seen him steadily forge his own repertoire, the fruits of which will be hitting vinyl racks and slip mats over the coming months. What can one expect musically? “The unexpected!” he says. “I’m writing everything from film scores to hip hop tunes and House grooves at the moment … if it grabs me, I’m laying it down!”

At just 25 years of age, Andrew Padula has played alongside global dance industry legends like Carl Cox, Nick Warren, Junkie XL, Dave Seaman, James Zabiela, Guy Ornadel, Felix Da Housecat, Arman Van Helden, Junior Sanchez, Kid Crème and Junior Jack … the way he’s rocking, they’ll be adding his name to their biographies sooner rather than later.

On Vinyl Pusher – Addictions …

“This compilation is a very special thing to me, because it’s all about the combination of people who have seen me come up through the years and who are now in a position to offer me something amazing like this to do. Vince Panagiotidis has sold me records since I was a tacker and now he and the boys at Vinyl Pusher are in a position where we can do things like this compilation together. Vince has walked every step of the way with me throughout my career and my successes have been his successes, also. This compilation is about the two of us, together, at this point in time.”

“The tracks are all bombs, what can I say?! The Vinyl Pusher crew have a serious ear for solid, upfront tunes, so this mix more than reflects that – it’s HOT!”

On recent studio work …

“I’m playing anything and everything in the studio right now! From dance to film scores, whatever, it’s all off the cuff … I’m using elements of progressive, elements of house, elements of breaks … I’m making the sort of music I would play in my sets.”

On Starting out …

“My cousin was a DJ, nah, just kidding! I started because of Simon and Jason Digby. My brother wanted us to become DJ’s like them … but I wouldn’t have a bar of that because he was a crap DJ, so I went off and did it myself!

“My first gig was doing Friday night’s at Milk Bar, but I got really into my style and hit my groove on Friday’s at Chaise Lounge. That was the gig and that was still the best gig I’ve had. We are all good friends in the booth down there and did what we did because we loved it … there were no egos, just bombs and fun.”

On plans for 2005 …

“I’m heading overseas again in July. I’m off to Singapore and Malaysia for Heineken and then on to London. I’ll settle in London for a while and make it a base, and then do the work that’s on offer – I’ve got a few gigs in Italy, Spain and France. It will be nice to get over there again and catch with people and show them what I’ve been up to …”
