IVAN GOUGH |
Ivan Gough’s
Career Has ‘Been Good’, Very Good …
By Harley

Whether you’re
talking about Dj’ing or producing, Ivan Gough is not only one of Australia’s
most accomplished dance music exports, he’s also one of its very first. A true,
100% ‘fair dinkum’ electronic music pioneer, his rare talent in the studio has
conjured a career that many artists only dream of, while his notorious skills in
the booth have rocked dancefloors across the globe – from London to New York,
and everywhere in between!
Not only have
Ivan’s records graced the airwaves of Kiss90 London and the crates of the likes
of Sasha and Oakenfold, but he also has more releases (and remixes) to his name
than any other Australian. And not only is he renowned for his enthusiasm, flair
and technical prowess on decks, but his legendary track selection and brand of
main room tunes (often his own!) have seen him tour nationally and
internationally on a prolific basis.
A self-confessed
musical addict, Ivan’s achievements on the international dance music stage
coupled with his passion has been an inspiration for an entire generation of
local DJ’s-cum-world-renowned beat junkies. A strong believer in sharing his
time and knowledge, Ivan has been instrumental in the careers and dreams of
those around him, including Luke Chable, Phil K and Grant Smillie - who have all
been blessed by his careful tutelage and guidance.
So who taught
him? Well, Ivan discovered the synthetic delights of Jean Michelle Jarre,
Tangerine Dream and Vangelis at an early age and the moment he heard a
synthesizer in a music shop he knew he’d found his musical calling: electronic
music! Several years after this awakening and working in several recording
studios, Ivan met a local DJ and they set about building a studio. He then began
producing dance music and Djing full time - initially scoring minor success with
‘I Need You’ as Pendulum in 1994 - a track that built a huge following worldwide
and was spun by Tong, Oakenfold and Sasha (before being signed to Tong’s “FFRR”
label).
Spurred on by
this early success, Ivan continued writing and producing and for the last 10
years has taken a journey that has encompassed every genre of dance music,
including Progressive, House, and Breaks; and has spawned classic anthems and
floor fillers like ‘Believe’, ‘Accelerator’, and what most consider to be the
first Australian breaks tune ever, ‘Summer Breeze’, circa 1997.
2005 sees Ivan’s
time still divided between the booth and the studio, and neither he nor his
worldwide fans would have it any other way!
DJ-wise, Ivan
currently rocks main room residencies at Melbourne’s Room680 and Qbar, where his
notorious cutting, scratching, ass shaking and fist pumping antics continue to
thrill packed floors.
While
studio-wise, he’s most recently teamed up with House legend, Grant Smillie, to
write and remix Electro, House, and Breaks tunes. Under the catchy moniker ‘TV
Rock’ the pair have already taken the world by storm with their reworking of the
Sander Kleinenberg bomb ‘The Fruit’ and will soon unleash their own artist
releases (including the debut, ‘Flaunt It’).
Now THAT’S TV
Rock!
